Since April 28th 1994, till date - 15 Cars in 32 Years... countless memories & A Journey Through India’s Automotive Story...
One might see a car simply as a means of transportation. But for me, every car that I have owned has represented my stage & phase of life – every time, a new beginning, a new aspiration, a new experience and quite often, a story of its own.
I just realised that my today’s purchase happens to be the 15th car since 1994. Looking back at this journey, it feels like I have travelled through not just diƯerent cars, but through the evolution & trajectory of the Indian automotive industry itself.
This beautiful journey began in April 1994 with the iconic Premier Padmini. Albeit a used car, it was my first car which followed automatically with a promotion then, as a Divisional Sales Manager. In those days, owning a car itself was a matter of pride. The Padmini had its own charm - simple, elegant and yet Indian. It takes me back to an era when cars were built diƯerently, roads were diƯerent and perhaps, life itself moved on at a diƯerent pace.
Then came the Contessa - a completely diƯerent experience, bigger, more imposing and with a distinctly premium feel for its time. An extra-long bonnet, square body, chrome bumpers and four round headlights
The "Y2K" marked arrival of Tata Indica which was another milestone. It was more than just a car; it represented the changing face of Indian automobile manufacturing as if the glimpse of where Indian Automotive market was headed and the emergence of an Indian passenger car in true sense. The car that represented a new India – 1.4 litre diesel engine, compact from outside but surprisingly spacious inside.
Then came the Hyundai Accent, bringing with it a new generation of refinement, styling and technology. After the rugged practicality on the Indica, Accent brought refinement, performance and a touch of modern sophistication.
This journey subsequently moved through Škoda Octavia, Skoda Superb, E Class Mercedes and Jaguar XF - each representing a diƯerent level of German engineering, British luxury & Royal style, performance and astounding driving experience.
And then there were the Tata SUVs – Tata Safari, Tata Aria and Tata Hexa...!
The Safari had its own personality. The Aria was an ambitious concept ahead of its time, while the Hexa brought together comfort, space and SUV characteristics in a very different package.
And somewhere along the way, there were others too - tagged as small cars - the Hyundai Santro, Hyundai i10, whose memories have had deep impression for its utility in jam packed city traƯic conditions and therefore will be cherished forever.
More than machines, when I look back and wander through the memory lane, today I realise that changing cars was never simply about upgrading from one model to another, but every car arrived at a diƯerent stage of life.
Some were chosen for practicality, some for comfort, some for technology, some for performance and some because they simply captured the imagination. And of course, some were chosen with the heart rather than the head...!
Over these 32 years, the Indian automotive industry itself has undergone a remarkable transformation. From carburettors to fuel injection. From manual windows, steering to power windows & power steering thru to connected cars. From basic safety features to airbags, ABS and sophisticated advanced driver - assistance systems. From cassette players to touchscreen infotainment and smartphone connectivity. From simply driving a car to experiencing an entire ecosystem around it. This journey of cars has, in many ways, mirrored the journey of India’s automobile industry.
But the real value of these cars was never the cars themselves but the countless journey - Family trips, Business travel, International Airport drops & pickups, long drives, unexpected detours, early morning departures, late-night returns. Conversations with family, friends and those countless moments when a car becomes a quiet space where you dream, think & plan or simply enjoy the road. Each car has left behind memories that no odometer can measure.
So today as I take delivery of new car, I find myself looking back with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the journeys, gratitude for the people who shared them and gratitude for our Indian automotive industry that has given us such an incredible evolution over these decades. From the mere beginning in 1994 thru to the 15th car in 2026... 32 years and an immeasurable number of memories.
And the best part, the journey continues...!
There are still roads to travel, places to discover and who knows, perhaps a few more cars waiting somewhere down the road...!
